STARD partners TU Graz Racing Team for 2022 Formula Student programme

Sebastian Muehlbacher, TUG Racing Team Leader and Michael Sakowicz, CEO and Founder of STARD

Global electric vehicle motor sport leader STARD – the engineering division of Stohl-Group – has teamed up with the TU Graz University Racing Team for its efforts in the 2022 Formula Student programme.

As a pioneer in the electric motor sport sphere, including the design, development and production of the first high performance all-electric rally and rallycross cars with support of leading automotive manufacturers, STARD has signed up as a platinum sponsor to the TU Graz University Racing Team. The support for the squad will include specifically allowing the team to access technical expertise within STARD not currently supported in-house.

As the TUG Racing team has just switched the propulsion method of its Formula Student car from a conventional internal combustion engine to a battery electric powertrain, STARD will allow access to its EV dyno facilities to assist in developing the car and powertrain systems, ahead of Formula Student events throughout Europe, including in Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

Established almost 25 years ago, Formula Student is a global competition for university teams, with its core philosophy grounded in educational engineering competition. Formula Student enjoys support from industry leading engineers such a Ross Brawn, as the concept aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to take up careers in engineering.

STARDs’ efforts are two-fold, to help the TUG Racing team in its 2022 mission, but with a wider view, to support and promote young engineering talent, while showcasing it’s EV expertise to a new audience.

Michael Sakowicz, STARD CEO and founder::

This project is another element in fortifying STARD´s pioneering role in EV high performance powertrain technologies. STARD as a company knows only too well the importance of nurturing young talent to become key players in the demanding technical world of mobility, therefore we want to take responsibility and become active through our involvement with TUG Racing Team, one of the most successful FSAE teams, to help develop that talent. Our position as a platinum technical sponsor to the team not only cements our involvement and commitment to nurturing young talent, but also just as importantly for STARD, demonstrates our commitment to supporting the ever-increasing number of programmes working towards a more sustainable future.”

Sebastian Muehlbacher, TUG Racing Team leader:

“We look forward to this collaboration with STARD, the cooperation between one of the pioneers of electric racing and the first and most successful Formula Student team in Austria brings unique opportunities for both parties. Neither of us settle for average – together STARD and TUG Racing will work tirelessly to push the existing limits of electric drivetrain technology to always be at least one nose ahead of the competition on the track – whether on gravel or asphalt.”

The TU Graz Racing Team was founded in 2002 and is based at Graz University of Technology. In the current season, they are developing, designing and producing their second electric-powered racing car for the Formula Student class, in which more than 500 university teams participate worldwide. They consist of more than 50 members, most of whom study at Graz University of Technology, but also at Karl Franzens University, and thus bring with them experience from a wide range of fields of study, from mechanical engineering and telematics to business administration and environmental systems science. With the help of professional CAD software and simulation tools, the members of this interdisciplinary team construct a competitive racing car using their free time. With the “TANKIA” series, they have made it to the podium 31 times in 69 competitions to date. The students have the opportunity to participate in the construction of a racing car, to contribute ideas and to gain practical experience alongside their studies.
